Shut Your Mouth and Listen!
“Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.”
-Proverbs 17:28 NLT
This is probably one of the funniest verses to read in the Bible. Yet it holds a valuable truth. I know it works for me. I’ve been in conversations with people who are just going on and on about something I vaguely know anything about. But if I give an occasional nod and “um hum” every now and then they seem to figure out what they needed. More times than you think they will even thank me for “helping” them.
I always think of this verse when that happens. Most people I talk to just need a listening ear. I believe the majority of us know what we need to do or not do. We just like getting confirmation from others.
Here are some similar verses:
“The wise don’t engage in empty chatter. What good are such words?”
-Job 15:3 NLT
“Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.”
-Proverbs 13:3 NLT
“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.”
-Proverbs 18:21 NLT
These simple verses are a reminder that to be Jesus to the world doesn’t require us to walk on water. It is the simple things in our daily lives that reflects God’s love for the world through us who believe in Him. We don’t always have to have the answer for every question, we just, for the most part, need to show up, shut up and listen.
Y’all have a blessed one!
